Amoureuse de Paris, la Callas donna son premier grand récital en 1958 à l’Opéra Garnier, y reviendra régulièrement pour chanter ses plus beaux opéras jusqu’à choisir de s’y installer définitivement. L e plus grand spectacle du monde » , écri vait la presse le 19 décembre 1958, pour annoncer le récital donné pour la pre mière fois à Paris par Maria Callas à l’Opéra Garnier. Un gala en faveur des œuvres sociales de la Légion d’hon neur réunissant, autour du général de Gaulle, l’un des plus prestigieux parterres d’invités : de nombreuses têtes couronnées, tels le shah d’Iran et la reine Elizabeth II, et des stars comme Charlie Cha plin, Jean Cocteau, ou Brigitte Bardot. Pour la cantatrice grecque, cette représentation parisienne est cruciale après le scandale de Rome où, quelques mois plus tôt, la diva grippée perd sa voix et interrompt son récital de Norma de Bellini, sous les sifflets du public. Les critiques sont sévères et tenaces, la Callas se met en retrait. Son retour, elle le fait sur la scène parisienne où elle interprète à nouveau Norma, son rôle fétiche et le plus exigeant. Son interprétation du bel canto est magis trale, médusant le tout-Paris. Une reconnaissance qui va estomper l’épisode romain et faire de Paris l’une des villes où elle se produira régulièrement, avant de s’y ins taller durablement jusqu’à sa mort, dans son apparte ment du 16 e arrondissement, au 36, rue Georges-Mandel, comme le rappelle une plaque commémorative. « Après mon affaire de Rome, confiera-t-elle aux journalistes après son récital, les Français ont été les seuls à essayer de comprendre ce qui m’était arrivé. T he greatest spectacle in the world ", raved the French press on December 19, 1958, announcing Maria Callas' first recital in Paris at the Opéra Garnier. Her perfor mance for a gala to aid the philanthropic work of the Legion of Honour brought together the most prestigious guests with General de Gaulle at their centre. Under the patronage of the French Repub lican Guard, invited guests included the Shah of Iran and his wife Farah Diba, Queen Elizabeth II of England, Grace Kelly, Charlie Chaplin, Jean Coc teau, and Brigitte Bardot. The Greek singer arrived for her curtain call beaming and was greeted with thunderous applause. For Maria Callas, this Paris performance was cru cial after the scandal in Rome. A few months ear lier, the diva had lost her voice due to a bout of the flu and was forced to interrupt her performance of Bellini's Norma after the first act, despite the absence of an understudy. A devastated Callas exited the opera house to whistling of the crowd and the disbelief of the Italian president, who was present that evening. The criticism was harsh and incessant, causing Callas to pause her career. Her comeback was this night on the Paris stage, once again as Norma, her favourite and most demand ing role. Her masterful interpretation of bel canto absolutely stunned her Parisian public. This sub sequent recognition helped Callas recover from the episode in Rome and she performed regularly in Paris before settling permanently in the 16th arrondissement where she stayed until her
