BARBARA EN QUATRE DATES 1930 : naissance

many years. The couple returned to Paris in 1951 and settled at 131 Rue Marcadet (18th). Claude became a magician and Barbara played the piano while working as a dishwasher and cloakroom attendant at La Fontaine des Quatre Saisons, a caba ret club owned by the Prévert brothers at 59 Rue de Grenelle (7th) now the Musée Maillol. It was an era of fashionable Left Bank cabarets like the L’Échelle de Jacob and La Rose Rouge. She met Jacques Brel there, who offered her the song Sur la Place . However, Barbara kept her distance from the ebullient intellectual and artistic scene of post-war Saint-Germain-des-Prés. “ I feel out of place in Saint-Germain. It’s full of old teenagers who dream of never growing up! ”. While developing her unique vocal style, the singer secured her first gigs at Chez Moineau (6th), followed by performances at the renowned cabaret L’Ecluse (6th). It was there that she earned her nickname, the “Midnight Singer”. Barbara was such a hit that the entire Parisian smart set flocked to L’Ecluse. She remained an undisputed star until 1964, often ending her nights at the neighbouring La Boule d’Or café at 4 Place Saint-Michel (6th). Her friend Jacques Brel would often wait for her there. In 1959, Barbara fell in love with Hubert Ballay, a diplomat based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Two years later, he gave her the keys to 14 rue Rémusat (16th). This is where she bought her first piano and wrote her most famous songs, including Dis Quand Reviendras-tu? and Nantes . When her mother died in 1967, she left Rue Rémusat. “ I took my suitcases, my glasses and my songs. And I closed the door, whispering your name ”, she sings in the song Rémusat . She then moved to 112 Rue de Michel-Ange, near Porte de Saint-Cloud. The duplex quickly became the centre of a social whirl and Barbara was in her element. In 1973, she left Paris for the rural tranquil lity of Précy in Seine-et-Marne. “ Barbara loved Paris, but, just like with her lovers, she left it for good at the age of 43 without saying goodbye or looking back ”, recounts writer Gilles Schlesser, her friend and biog rapher. Barbara died in 1997, at the age of 67, and 2000 people attended her funeral, including many friends from the entertain ment industry. ◆ THE INSPIRING 16TH ARRONDISSEMENT

SAINT-GERMAIN En 1950, elle décide de tenter sa chance en Belgique. Elle choisit comme nom de scène Barbara Brody. Le nom est proche de celui de sa mère, Brodsky. Le prénom aurait été emprunté à une aïeule moldave, Varvara – à moins qu’il ait été inspiré par le poème de Jacques Prévert, Barbara … C’est l’époque où la jeune fille au piano rencontre la pianiste Ethery Rouchadzé, sa première accompagnatrice, et son premier mari, Claude Sluys. Elle revient à Paris avec lui en 1951 et ils s’installent au 131, rue Marcadet (Paris 18 e ), là où vivait Hava. Claude est prestidigitateur, tandis que Barbara fait la plonge et tient le vestiaire à La Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons au 59, rue de Grenelle (Paris 7 e ), le cabaret des frères Prévert, devenu depuis le musée Maillol. Et dès qu’elle le peut, entre deux répétitions, elle se met au piano. C’est l’époque des cabarets en vogue rive gauche, tels L’Échelle de Jacob ou la Rose Rouge… Elle y rencontre un certain Jacques Brel qui lui offre une chanson, Sur la place . Mais Barbara garde ses distances avec l’effervescence de Saint-Germain-des-Prés : « Je me sens déphasée à Saint-Germain. C’est plein de vieux ados qui rêvent de ne jamais en sortir! ». Elle repart en Belgique, où sa carrière entame son envol : premier récital, première émission de radio, premier 78-tours… Ayant affiné son style vocal si singulier, la chanteuse décroche ses premières scènes parisiennes, Chez Moineau, au 10, rue Guénégaud (Paris 6 e ) et surtout au prestigieux cabaret L’Écluse, 15, quai des Grands Augustins (Paris 6 e ), en 1954, où elle gagnera son sur nom, « la chanteuse de minuit ». Le Tout-Paris s’y presse pour l’écouter et jusqu’en 1964, elle en sera la vedette incontestée, finissant régulièrement ses nuits au café voisin, La Boule d’or, au 4, place Saint-Michel (Paris 6 e ), où l’attend souvent l’ami Brel. UN 16 e ARRONDISSEMENT INSPIRANT Un autre noctambule gagne son cœur en 1959. Hubert Ballay est diplomate, en poste à Abidjan, en Côte d’Ivoire. Il l’installe en 1961 dans un appartement au 14, rue de Rémusat (Paris 16 e ). Barbara s’achète son premier piano – noir – à 29 ans, sur lequel elle écrira Dis, quand reviendras-tu ? et Nantes . Au décès de sa mère, en 1967, elle quitte la rue de Rémusat pour le 112, rue Michel-Ange, toujours dans le 16 e arrondis sement. Elle s’y fait construire un studio d’enregis trement où naissent ses plus belles chansons, dont L’Aigle noir . Elle abandonne le duplex en 1973, pour la quiétude rurale de Précy-sur-Marne (77). « Barbara aimait Paris, mais elle le quitte à 43 ans, sans un mot, sans se retourner, comme elle quittait ses amants », raconte Gilles Schlesser dans la biographie qu’il lui a consacrée. Et comme elle a quitté la vie en 1997, à 67 ans, escortée jusqu’au cimetière de Bagneux (94) par 2 000 personnes qui se demandaient « Dis, quand reviendras-tu ? ». ◆
