VASQUE olympique Le retour de flamme

F or the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the soaring flame ascended above the Tuileries each evening, suspended in the air like a childhood dream. More than 320,000 spectators gathered to admire it, their gaze fixed upward in awe and wonder. This poetic triumph impressed even the highest levels of government. So much so, President Macron has decreed that the caul dron will rise again every summer in the Paris skies until the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. We unveil the se crets of this airborne flame. A BOLD PROJECT The organisers of Paris 2024 initially expressed little inte rest in the project until designer Mathieu Lehanneur pro posed a simple yet impressive concept: to make the caul dron ascend into the Parisian night sky like a sunrise. This feat occurred in the Tuileries Garden, where in 1783 the Robert brothers and Professor Jacques Charles launched the first hydrogen-filled balloon. History, it seemed, was taking flight once again. DOUBTS UNTIL THE VERY LAST MINUTE EDF engineers created a “flame” without fire or smoke, a laboratory prototype that caused its designers consi derable concern right up until its launch. There were no guarantees that this complex machine would function properly in real-life conditions. Suspended from a giant helium balloon, the 1.8-tonne, 60-meter-tall structure was powered by a single cable to transmit water and electri city. For those who missed this spectacular event during Paris 2024 will have the chance to see the glorious balloon soaring above the Tuileries Garden every evening from now until September 14. Ce succès populaire et poétique a ému jusqu’au sommet de l’État : par décision du président de la République, la vasque montera de nouveau dans le ciel parisien chaque été jusqu’aux Jeux olympiques de Los Angeles, en 2028.
