Franchir LE PASSAGE CROSSING THE THRESHOLD

E n feuillettant ce portfolio réalisé par le photographe VuThéara Kham, on a du mal à imaginer que les prises de vue qui le composent ont été réalisées dans la même ville. C’est pourtant bien Paris qui se dévoile ici, polymorphe et irréductible à un seul style urbain, à un seul genre architectural. De la pyramide du Louvre au passage du Grand-Cerf, du pont des Arts au parc Monceau, chaque cliché témoigne d’un univers particulier, comme si la capitale était un tissage d’étoffes uniques. Mais l’idée de VuThéara Kham est de rester à distance, aux abords, comme, en prémice, un dernier regard avant l’action. Chaque porte, grille en fer forgé, seuil ou arcade, marque ainsi le passage d’une frontière imaginaire, et se perçoit comme une invitation. « Aimant jouer sur les cadrages, explique l’artiste, j’ai cherché un effet de plongée à travers la porte, entre deuxmondes. » Franchir le pas, entrer dans une nouvelle dimension, même éphémère, et percer les secrets de la beauté toujours changeante de Paris, quel programme plus stimulant ? u

B rowsing through photographer VuThéara Kham’s Paris portfolio, it’s hard to ima- gine that these photographs were all shot in the same city. Yet Paris is unveiled here in all its diversity of architectural styles. From the Louvre Pyramid to the Passage du Grand- Cerf, the Pont des Arts and Square Édouard-VII, each photograph reflects a distinct world, as if the capital were a many-splendored patchwork whose pieces create a whole. But Kham seems to remain at a distance, casting a look over his shoulder before getting his shot. Each door, wrought-iron gate, threshold or arcade marks a passage through an imaginary border, an invi- tation. “Since I like playing with framing, I tried to create the effect of diving through the door between two worlds”, said the artist. Taking the plunge to enter a new, ephemeral dimension and unlock the secrets of Paris’s ever-changing beauty is an enticing proposal indeed. u PONT DES ARTS (6 th arr.) Framed by two lamps and a stone arch, a deep perspective beckons us to pass through to the Louvre’s Cour Carre,́ near the Institut de France, via a bridge of light once famous for the thousands of padlocks that dangled from its railings.
