T he Musée des Arts Décoratifs’ newest exhibition takes us into the fabulous interiors of an Indian palace in the 1930s. This journey through time and space narrates the extraordinary life of Yeshwant Rao Holkar II, the Maharajah of Indore, who developed a passion for modern European art while studying at Oxford in the 1920s. Upon his return to India, the youngMaharajah broke with tradition, commissioning architect Eckart Muthesius to build a modern palace furnished and decorated with pieces by the likes of Le Corbusier, Louis Sognot, and the Bauhaus School, who were inclined to use innovative materials like synthetic leather, metal, and glass. The exhibition presents this three-dimensional dream via his recreated bedroom, study, and library. The royal beds, armchairs with integrated lamps, carpets, and decorations are invaluable witnesses of a time when anything seemed possible. u P ascal M ouneyres commande à l’architecte Eckart Muthesius d’un palais moderne, rompant ainsi avec la tradition indienne. Les Arts décoratifs redonnent corps à ce rêve en trois dimensions en reconstituant certains aménagements, dont ceux de la chambre à coucher, du cabinet de travail ou de la bibliothèque.
