N ewly reopened, theMusée d’Art Moderne de Paris presents this uncompromising artist who constantly reinvented himself. Fromhis first watercolours, made in 1922, till his death in Antibes in 1989, the German painter Hans Hartung never stopped working, despite the many obstacles he encountered. Driven fromhis homeland by the Nazis and forced to leave his refuge in Spain’s Balearic Islands for lack of money, he settled in Paris and finally found success, winning the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1960. His triumph proved short-lived, as the New French Realists and American Pop artists rejected his work. Undaunted, this master of lyrical abstraction stayed true to his vision. Hartung, who lost a leg in combat in 1944, “was not a theoretician. He produced. As he physically weakened, he ingeniously adapted his practices to continue to create freely,” said the celebrated critic Xavier Douroux. In addition to the 300 works shown here, the exhibition presents the tools Hartung devised in pursuit of his vision: an inverted vacuum cleaner, a sulphate sprayer, and a broomwith branches for whipping, scratching and sprinkling his paintings, which experimented with bold framing and forms. u C hristophe J acquet HANSHARTUNG, LA FABRIQUE DUGESTE, jusqu’au 1 er mars/untilMarch 1.
