The play takes place partly in Paris, particularly in the Châtelet neighbourhood. Is this why you chose the Théâtre du Châtelet? We had to find a theatre that could foster a certain intimacy with the audience, like in the London thea tres where the play has been run ning for so many years. Hugo’s genius lies in his ability to create a great epic through very intimate scenes where we feel close to the characters. The playwright Oliv ier Py, who had just taken over as director of the Théâtre du Châtelet in February 2023, fully embraced the project. You recently moved from the Ile Saint-Louis to the 11th arrondissement. Why this choice? I relocate every two years or so. I make a decision quickly, on the spur of the moment. The places you live in are as ephemeral as theatre sets. When I lived on the Ile Saint-Louis, I felt like I was living in a theatre set. Now I live in a 1970s apartment on the Rue Saint-Maur. I have a clear view of the 20th arrondissement and its lights. It’s a stark contrast to the medieval atmosphere of the Île Saint-Louis. What was your childhood like? I was born in Saint-Étienne, but my father’s job with the Casino group meant that I moved around a lot. I got my start in the theatre in Marseille, where I performed for the first time. But I wasn’t a very talented actor. It was meeting the playwright Gildas Bourdet, head of Marseille’s Théâtre de La Criée in the late 1990s, that led me to directing. Other equally influential encounters followed, with Pierre Lescure, Line Renaud, Florian Zeller. Today, I realise how much my career has exceeded the expectations of my youth. Ladislas Chollat waited eight years for the go-ahead from the British producer and rights owner Cameron Mackintosh to bring the musical back to France. Alain Boublil, the author of the original libretto, has modernised his texts for this new production, which features 39 actors and 14 musicians.
