NOUVELLE LIGNE HYDRATANTE

Bonne lecture!

When Paris reinvents its past F ollowing a 12-year restoration, Paris’s Richelieu library – the historic cradle of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France – has finally reopened its doors. Contained within this temple of knowledge, an institution dating from the Grand Siècle, visitors will discover a library, a museum and extensive archives for researchers and students of art history and heritage, all under one roof. Past its gates on the Rue Vivienne, a brand new garden by landscape designer Gilles Clément is filled with plants once used in paper- making, in homage to the library’s many volumes. The Galerie Mazarin, with its Baroque frescœs, and the huge dome of Salle Labrouste all shine with a new brilliance. Here’s a well-kept secret: some 50,000 skilled artisans call Paris and the Greater Paris region their home – jewellery makers, pleaters, hat makers, featherworkers, gilders, cabinetmakers, and so many more. In fact, we can tally a grand total of 183 living heritage trades. These “small hands”, so important to the luxury fashion houses, are entering the limelight during special events and on the catwalks. In our story “Mode de Vie” you’ll discover some of these ancestral trades, which guarantee authenticity and quality. Paris constantly refers to its extraordinary past to reinvent the city of the future, as demonstrated by the age-old neighbourhood, now known as SoPi (South Pigalle, at the heights of the 9th arrondissement). BMX champion Matthias Dandois takes us on a tour to discover this colourful district overflowing with trendy new addresses. Then on to the Rue des Rosiers, a historic neighbourhood full of contrasts in the heart of the Marais, where fashion concept stores cosy up to falafel stalls. In our “Experiences” section, we offer a selection of newly tested and approved addresses, including bars, hotels, restaurants, boutiques and more. Don’t miss our “Perspectives” pages, with contributions from “Phébé Watch for International Ideas” from Le Point. We discover why talking about ourselves in the third person leads to wiser conflict management, and the reasons behind the phenomenal success of fiction based on imaginary worlds, like The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones . Happy reading!
