Le Cri (1895). The Scream, 1895.

The Scream in lithograph Because the famous renditions of Munch’s The Scream can no longer travel, the exhibition presents a 1895 lithograph printed in black ink and coloured by hand which captures the artist’s anguished revelation: “I was walking on a path with two friends, the sun was setting. Suddenly the sky turned blood red (...). My friends continued, and I remained there, trembling with anxiety. I felt an infinite scream passing through the universe and tearing nature apart”, he wrote. The Oslo National Gallery confirms that the written inscription – “Could only have been painted by a madman” – is certainly by Munch himself.

L’Enfant malade (1896). The Sick Child, 1896.

Celle d’un artiste absolu qui a transcendé son temps. illustrate the extent to which his art bears the mark of early bereave- ments: notably Despair , The SickChild , and Puberty andVampire . Sinuous lines, livid faces, threatening shadows, anguish ... Munch’s hallucinated visions, where women are often portrayed as frightening, are quintessen- tially unsettling. A lithograph of The Scream perfectly evokes this vertigo. WhenMunch adopted expressionism’s vivid colours and gestures, he also exalted life – thevitalityof thebody, love’s renewal andregeneration through light.Munch revisited these themes for nearly40years (the show includes eight versions of his Young Girls on the Bridge ). In some instances an ele- ment in a painting becomes a theme for the next one, like a generational extension of life. Munch was exhilarated by the works of playwrights Au- gust Strindberg andHenrik Ibsen, withwhomhe collaborated, and laid the foundations ofmodernNorwegian iconography, thanks tohismonumental murals created for the University of Oslo. Two of the final canvases in the exhibition, TheSun and StarryNight , showa lifeunfoldingbetweenshadow and light. The life of an absolute artist who transcended his time.
