“ Ici, tout tourne autour du marché ”

M arcelo Joulia is hap- piest when he can see the sky. The architecture of the Aligre neighbou- rhood allows him this pleasure. “It’s like the suburbs, with low three- to four-story buildings that let the light through. You can see the Paris rooftops”, says the Ar- gentinian architect, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 30 years and opened three businesses here: his architecture rm, Naço, the restaurant Virtus, which won a Michelin star in 2019, and Marcelo Cycles, a bike shop. When he rst moved here, the neighbourhood was still working class and inha- bited by craftspeople. “That’s what attracted me. There were marble workers and carpenters, and I had all the prototypes of my furniture and lamps made here”, he recalls, at a table in the Square Trousseau 1 where he often starts his day. This 1907 brasserie, with an ele- gant, old-fashioned charm, offers a dedicated breakfast menu.

Quand il s’est installé, le quartier était encore très ouvrier et peuplé d’artisans. « C’est ce qui m’a attiré. On y trouvait des marbriers, des tourneurs à bois, etc., et j ’ y faisais fabriquer tous les prototypes demes meubles ou demes lampes » , se rap- pelle-t-il, attablé au Square Trous- seau 1 . Une brasserie datant de 1907, au charme désuet et élégant, où il démarre souvent sa journée, l’endroit proposant notamment une carte dédiée au petit déjeuner. Les bâtiments peu élevés, de trois ou quatre étages, laissent passer la lumière. On voit les toits de Paris » , raconte l’architecte argentin qui ha- bite le quartier depuis trente ans. Il
