Many buildings have escaped destruction by sheltering a new activity, like Paris’ Gare d’Orsay train station, which was transformed into a museum. Bu- dapest revived the Gresham Pa- lace, an Art Nouveau gem, by converting it into a hotel. Recent- ly, there has been discussion in the French capital about resto- ring the Champs-Élysées to its former glory. Once upon a time, Parisians went to the Champs for a breath of nature when there were still fields beyond the Tui- leries Palace, and during the Belle Époque the Champs-Ély- sées became synonymous with pleasure and entertainment. By 2024, “the most beautiful avenue in the world” will be greener and feature more sunny outdoor ter- races and reduced traffic ( see p. 118 ). The fabled avenue will radiate an atmosphere and li- festyle “that are also a part of our heritage,” concludes Judicaël de la Soudière-Niault. ◆
