Regards intimes sur l’Europe Intimate views of Europe CENTQUATRE

E xiste-t-il une photographie européenne ? Quels regards singuliers portent ses plus jeunes photographes ? Depuis neuf ans, le festival Circulation(s) répond. Sans filtre. À chaque édition au Centquatre, il rassemble une trentaine d’artistes émergents, présentés à égalité, par ordre alphabétique. Cette fois, l’exposition change et l’association Fetart, sa créatrice, a défini cinq angles de vue. Dont une forme de « photographie thérapeuthique », centrée sur le corps et ses souffrances, avec la photojournaliste berlinoise Sina Niemeyer dénonçant un abus sexuel et l’ex-architecte française Camille Gharbi, les violences conjugales. D’autres, comme l’Allemand Emile Ducke et son reportage sur un train médical en Sibérie, ou Jaakko Kahilaniemi en Finlande, scrutent la transformation des territoires, des paysages par l’être humain. Plusieurs s’approprient aussi des archives familiales, des collections d’images pour raconter un pays, comme la Roumanie. En 2018, le festival avait réuni près de 48000 visiteurs, un record. u

I s there such a thing as “European” photography? What viewpoints are held by its youngest photographers? The Circulation(s) 2019 festival, held at the Centquatre contemporary arts center, presents the work of 30 emerging artists. Different thematic areas are being explored this year: “Therapeutic Photography” focuses on the body and its sufferings in photographs by Berlin-based photographer Sina Niemeyer, who dencounces sexual abuse, and Camille Gharbi from France, who treats the issue of domestic violence. Emile Ducke’s report on a Siberian medical train and Jaakko Kahilaniemi’s gaze on Finland examine how remote areas are being transformed by human activity. Other artists draw on family archives and collections of images to draw portraits of countries such as Romania.
