Mais peut-on tout noter ? « Concernant les avocats, mais c’est aussi le cas pour d’autres professions, ce ne sont pas leurs connaissances sur le problème qui est soumis mais des qualités com- ment la sympathie ou ladécoration de la salle d’attente qui sont prises en considération , s’étrangleAnthony Bem, avocat spécialiste dudroit des technologies qui prédit une courte vie à cette initiative. dividual gain from reading the viewpoints of people with widely divergent tastes, or who are not looking for the same things? Munzel also emphasizes that fake reviews “account for a third of the comments posted in France, ac- cording to the French Ministry of the Economy, with marketers seeking to regain control by pub- lishing good reviews in order to improve the ratings of their prod- ucts and services. It’s another is- sue that needs to be resolved.” Last April, the European Parlia- ment voted to require companies and platforms to control the reli- ability of their reviews. The issue of a rating’s value is even more sensitive when individuals are be- ing assessed. Uber drivers, for example, review their clients, stu- dents rate teachers, plaintiffs rate lawyers, patients rate doctors, and singles on dating apps rate poten- tial soul mates. Can everything be rated? “Lawyers, for example, are often assessed on how friend- ly they are or based on their wait- ing room decor rather than their knowledge of the relevant issues. This is not what people are look- ing for. What they really want is opinions based on substance,” laments Anthony Bem, an attorney specialising in technology law. Rating a service and judging an individual are two different things. The television series Black Mir- ror has portrayed the perils of social ratings. In an episode titled Nosedive , the heroine descends into hell as her ratings tumble, completely misunderstood by her peers. In a nonfiction version of this story, China plans to imple- ment a program of “social credits” on the comportment of its citizens, evaluating everything from how peoplemanage their bank accounts to their work, shopping habits, social media posts, and compli- ance with traffic regulations, not to mention tracking them via CCTV cameras. On Booking. com, the various elements – from room cleanliness to the hotel’s location – don’t carry the same weight, and the formula they use is not disclosed. VERS LA FIN DES NOTES À L’ÉCOLE ? NOMORE GRADES IN SCHOOLS?

A few years ago, Finland abolished grades for first few years of school. Students are evaluated on a scale of 4 to 10 only from the age of nine. Since then, many countries, as well as more experimental institutions, have joined the movement. “When a test is valued in numerical terms, grades are indeed reductive and don’t sufficiently take into account progress over time,” says Roger-Pol Droit. At worst, they create a spirit of competition and encourage the “everyone for himself” mentality at a time when teamwork is encouraged throughout our professional lives.
