DE L’ART !

L’heure du règne anglais The English hour MUSÉE DU LUXEMBOURG

R eynolds, Gainsborough, Turner.

I n 1768, King George III founded the Royal Academy of Arts to offer British painters the best possible forum for creating and exhibiting their work. This golden age of English pictorial art shone throughout the world at the forefront of the avant-garde. But three artists stood out: Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), champion of historical classicism; Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), whose psychological audacity renewed the art of portraiture; and J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), an outstanding landscape painter and a forefather of Impressionism. The Palais du Luxembourg pays tribute to these three emblematic figures though a broad selection of works from the Tate Britain, covering the period of 1760 to 1820. A stunning panorama rarely seen in France. u P ascal M ouneyres L’ÂGE D’OR DE LA PEINTURE ANGLAISE, DE REYNOLDS À TURNER, jusqu’au 16 février/until February 16.
