A perennially modern artist, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) continues to fascinate century after century. The Florentine free-thinker, inventor, architect, anatomist, sculptor, scientist, philosopher, writer, and artist excelled in a staggering number of spheres but reached his absolute pinnacle in painting. For the 500-year anniversary of his death, the Louvre has assembled many of his greatest works, including The Virgin of the Rocks, La Belle Ferronnière, Mona Lisa, St. John the Baptist, and St. Anne, as well as several dozen drawings made during the last three years of his life at the Château d’Amboise under the protection of Francis I. This exhibition provides the perfect opportunity to observe how this great genius sought to breathe life into his paintings and transcend the beauty of the world.
