bien qu’accessible car très pop et empruntant aux codes de la mode et du portrait en studio. En lui offrant une carte blanche, j’ai eu envie de faire venir son monde à Paris : ses couleurs, son énergie, sa culture, son foisonnement, mais aussi son cercle car il fait venir les artistes Zahrin Kahlo et Lamia Naji. On dépasse les frontières de la photo. Hassan Hajjaj est un artiste complet. La photo reste au cœur de ses créations mais il travaille également sur du mobilier, des tapis et des vêtements. En ce sens, il correspond à notre volonté de décloisonner l’univers de la photo. L’ensemble de ses créations trouvera naturellement sa place à la Mep. C’est une manière d’attirer un public nouveau ? Nous espérons notamment toucher la communauté franco-marocaine, comme nous avons réussi à attirer une population plus jeune, plus tournée vers la mode et les réseaux sociaux, avec des artistes comme JR, Ren Hang ou Coco Capitán. Simon Backer, director of Maison Européenne de la Photographie, welcomes Anglo-Moroccan artist Hassan Hajjaj. Why did you give Hassan Hajjaj carte blanche? Because he’s an artist too little known in France, despite his work’s accessibility and use of fashion and studio portraiture. By giving Hajjaj free rein, I can showcase his colours, energy, culture and productivity, as well as his circle, as he invited artists Zahrin Kahlo and Lamia Naji. We’ve gone past the boundaries of photography. Hajjaj is a multifaceted artist. Photography is the heart of his output, but he also makes furniture, carpets, and clothing. In this sense, his work corresponds to our wish to open up the world of photography. All of his art will have a place at the MEP. Is it a way to attract a new audience? We hope to appeal to the Franco-Moroccan community in the same way that we attracted a younger, social media-savvy crowd with artists like JR, Ren Hang, and Coco Capitán.
