LE GRAND PROJET A MAJOR PROJECT Un parc pour la tour Eiffel

The Eiffel Tower gets a new park. Kathryn Gustafson is designing Paris' biggest garden under the Eiffel Tower. Winner of a 2018 contest launched by the Mayor of Paris to redevelop the area around the Iron Lady, the American landscape architect's OnE project includes 1.6 km (1 mi) of garden space fromEsplanade du Trocadéro to Ecole Militaire. From the Place du Trocadéro, whose roundabout will be replaced with a green amphitheatre, it will descend in grassy terraces to the Pont d'Iéna, which will be transformed into a grassy pedestrian bridge. Under the Eiffel Tower, access to elevators and ticketing will be streamlined with a forecourt redesigned in harmony with the Champ-de- Mars' restored gardens. Following a public consultation, work on the project could begin by 2021 and finish in time for the 2024 Olympics, when the Champ-de-Mars will host the beach volleyball competition. Sous la tour Eiffel, Kathryn Gustafson veut dérouler « le plus grand jardin de Paris ». La paysagiste américaine a remporté le concours lancé par la mairie de Paris en 2018 pour réaménager les abords de la Dame de fer. Avec son projet OnE, la lauréate souhaite revoir toute la perspective, de l’esplanade du Trocadéro à l’École militaire. Sur une bande en descente de 1,6 km, elle va créer un jardin unique. Il part de la place du Trocadéro, dont le rond-point va être suppléé par un amphithéâtre de verdure, descend en terrasses et gradins enherbés jusqu’au pont d'Iéna, lui-même rendu aux seuls piétons et paré de deux squares végétalisés. Sous la tour Eiffel, l’accès aux ascenseurs et la billetterie seront revus et allégés. Le parvis doit être redessiné en harmonie avec le Champ-de-Mars, qui, jusqu’à la place Joffre, va retrouver ses jardins d’origine. Après concertation publique, les travaux pourraient débuter en 2021, et s’interrompre lors des Jeux olympiques de 2024, le Champ-de-Mars accueillant le tournoi de beach-volley. D’ici là, un film d’animation en 3D permet déjà de survoler le projet.
