Walking down the Rue Condorcet, Sarah stops to chat with Jacques, a cabinetmaker 2 . “Is this eagle made of bronze?”, she asks. “Abso- lutely”, says the craftsman, who restores furniture and lighting in his workshop-boutique, “I seek out interesting post-war and 18th- century objects”. Sarah has bought pendant lamps from him and appreciates how “Jacques gives a soul to objects and narrates their fascinating story”. While strolling on the Rue desMar- tyrs, she indulges in a quick chou à la crème from Popelini 3 . The owner, Sonia, offers this delicate pastry exclusively (€2.50), avail- able in various avours: ganache with Valrhona, fresh Iranian pista- chio, and many more. “They’re so fresh and light, I can eat four at a time!” confesses Sarah. The barber browses the shelves at L’Atelier 9 bookstore 4 . “I enjoy coming here with my son, who’s an avid reader. Rochechouart, where Sarah buys or rents clothes and accessories from the 20s to the 70s. “We have everything but Marilyn Monroe’s garter belt!” laughs owner Brigitte Chiron, sporting a 1950’s fin- ger-wave hairstyle. Brigitte is an expert at revamping and copy- ing vintage clothes, thanks to her background as a stylist. Today, she shows Sarah a cute leather jacket: “This sexy cut brings out your Emma Peel side!” exclaims Brigitte. At nearby Papilles Coffeehouse 6 Sarah, sporting new leather ankle boots, relaxes at her favourite table. “I come here for brunch. I love the Guacamour: mashed avo- cado with fresh herbs, shallots, lime and toasted country bread. Everything is made fresh. I
