– On pourra aller se baigner en arrivant à Koh Samui ? Oui ? On ira se baigner ? – Attends, Chloé, occupe-toi plutôt de ta petite sœur. “Dad, can we go swimming when we get to Koh Samui? Pleeease! I wanna go swimming!” “Uggh, Chloe, not now. Give me a hand with your little sister, love.”

“Promise that we’re going to see Father Christmas’s reindeer in La-land, Gran?” “Lap-land, Ugo. Yes, darling, I promise. They’ll be there!”

“One day, I’m going to be a pilot too!” “Yes, you’ll be flying us over to New York next time, won’t you?”

As the sun rose over Paris, the airport was all hustle and bustle. Tomorrow would be... Christmas! The corridors bubbled with excitement. Lists of exotic destinations twinkled on the screens: Bangkok, Rovaniemi, New York...

The passengers bumped into each other at the bag drop. By the baggage check-in machines, Chloe’s dad helped Ugo’s grandma lift up her bulging suitcase. Whilst the adults were distracted, the two children saw that the circular bench in the corner looked like a flying saucer and began to play together.

From not far off, Paul peered over at them. He was a bit older, but far too shy to jump in on their game. They did look pretty friendly though... “Hello,” he mumbled, making a step in their direction. “I’m Paul. You guys?” “Come fly with us in our saucer. I’m Chloe. He’s Ugo.” “Look! Even Rudy’s checked in. No way I’ll lose him now,” squealed Ugo proudly.

On first name terms and with their bags safely checked in, the new friends followed some funny men towards security.

“They’re our travel companions that lead families through the airport,” explained the man working at security. “Take a tray and empty your pockets, please.”

Bizarre. On dirait des initiales. – P. N., P. N. … réfléchit Paul à voix haute. Comme « Père Noël » ! Suddenly, Paul noticed something strange. “Hey, Chloe!” he whispered. “There’s something written on the label of Ugo’s cuddly reindeer.” “SOS FC.” she read slowly. “Weird. What do all those initials mean?” “FC. FC...” Paul repeated aloud. “FC like Father Christmas!”

U… B… L… I… É… C… H… A… The children’s mouths hung open. And there was more to come! A few minutes later, the windows of the shops and restaurants started flashing at them as they whooshed past: FORGOTTENSL...

– Mes parents m’appellent pour petit-déjeuner, lance Chloé. Venez avec nous ! – Super idée ! s’exclame Paul, je demande à mon papa. – Et moi, à ma grand-mère, annonce joyeusement Ugo.

“Ooh, that’s my parents calling me over for breakfast,” Chloe cut in. “Come and eat with us!”

“Great!” exclaimed Paul. “I’ll ask my dad.” “And I’ll ask Gran,” said Ugo, grinning.

* Letters in the shop window F.O.R.G.O.T.T.E.N.S.L

RETTE ? CHAR… IVARI ? CHAR… IOT ? As they enjoyed a healthy and tasty breakfast, the children tried to understand the messages they had seen. What was someone trying to tell them? FORGOTTENSL...EEPING BAG? FORGOTTENSL...IPPERS? FORGOTTENSL...ED?

The waiting room was calm and subdued; everybody was just hanging around until their planes were ready. Out on the runway, however, it was all action as the planes were taken care of and the luggage was loaded. Ugo squashed his nose against the window, fascinated. Meanwhile, Paul and Chloe headed to the play area. There were so many distractions that they’d almost forgotten about the strange messages.

Merci beaucoup, madame ! SiraP tro-poréA ?!? “Merry Christmas!” chirped a stewardess, handing the surprised children a party bag each. Whilst Paul threw himself immediately into colouring in a map of the airport, Chloe drew out a beautiful snow globe. “Wow! Look, it’s the Eiffel Tower in the snow,” she breathed. “Thank you! … SiraP tro-poréA?!?”

– Hein ? sursaute Paul. “What?” blurted out Paul. “That’s what’s written on my snow globe!” explained Chloe, showing him the base of the globe. “But what does it mean? Do you think it’s a third message?” asked Paul.

Ugo was zipping along the mechanical walkway when he decided to open his party bag too. A strange keyring the shape of an airport trolley fell out. As he reached down to pick it up, he discovered that not only was it painted in Christmas colours, but it was also heaped full of tiny presents. It looked more like a sled than a trolley, in fact.

“Yee-haa! Chloe, Paul, check this out!” he shouted. That’s cute,” replied Chloé, who was far too caught up in trying to crack the code to really look at Ugo’s keyring. “We’ve found another message.

As she stumbled over the strange word, Ugo’s keyring disappeared into a swirling mist and they could make out that it was swelling dramatically. What was going on now? “Woah,” stammered Chloe, beside herself. “Who are all those presents for?” The fog transformed into a shimmer of soft snowflakes and a sign stood before them with the word Paris and an arrow. “FORGOTTEN SLED! I get it!” Paul shrieked. “It’s Father Christmas asking us to help him deliver his presents! It’s all starting to make sense!”

Without a moment’s hesitation, the boy took charge as if he’d done this many times before. “Right, team! Take your seats. Emergency delivery service!” Chloe and Ugo jumped aboard as the sled sped away in a flurry of snow. The airport looked very small beneath them. “Don’t worry,” said Chloe, hugging Ugo tightly. “We’re going to help Father Christmas. Isn’t that amazing?”

– On est au-dessus de Paris ! Youhou ! On vole !

“That’s Paris down there. Yippee! We’re flying!” They could see the Arc de Triomphe, the Avenue des Champs Elysées, the Eiffel Tower... It was mind-blowing!

“We mustn’t forget to deliver the presents though,” Chloe reminded them. “Come on, Ugo, pass me that one on your right. Paul, fly us as close to the roofs as possible.”

And sure enough, chimney by chimney, the children delivered every last package.

– Paul, hou hou ! – Chloé chériiie ! – Ugo, mon cœur ?

All of a sudden, voices pierced the snowy silence: “Pa-ul!” “Chloe, love!” “Ugo, darling?”

And with that, the children found themselves once again in the departure lounge, exactly where the keyring had morphed into their sled... how long ago? They had completely lost track of time. Had it all been a dream?

Swiftly, they were plummeted back into reality. Now, it was time to set off on another adventure!

Promising they would write soon, Chloe, Ugo and Paul looked up to see the word THANK YOU flashing on one of the screens: a final message from Father Christmas!

Joyeux Noël, les amis !

Merry Christmas, everyone!
